On this project we were working on installing a Unico system, which is a “Small-Duct High-Velocity Heating and Cooling”1 System. These work by having many vents around a home that are all connected to one central trunk, which runs back to a condenser/fan. While installing this, I learned quite a bit about ductwork and how this style of system works. I learned that how the vents are run, and the type of duct is very important near the outlet to make sure there’s no noise. Another thing I learned was when you connect to the main trunk, you drill into it. You need to make sure that piece is removed from the pipe, because it’ll rattle around when the system is running. This can be done with a magnet or something to reach in and grab it.
